ROVAN, William P. – Graduating from ROTC in 1960, Bill joined the 101st Abn Div with Echo Co, 1st Abn Battle Group, subsequently Assault Gun (SPAT) Platoon Leader. In 1963 Bill was assigned to 1st SFG in Okinawa and then to SF Detachment, Taiwan. After Infantry Officer Advanced Course and a one-year assignment as BCT Company Cmdr, Bill volunteered for Vietnam and the 1st Bde (S) 101st Abn Div. During his tour he served as S-3 Air and Commander, Co A, 2-327th Inf. He returned to Vietnam in 1968 and served as Bn XO, Bn S-3 and Bde Asst S-3 of the 1st Bde (S), 5th Inf Div. attached to 3rd Marine Div. along the DMZ. Returning to 1st SFG in Okinawa, Bill was once again assigned to SF Detachment in Taiwan. In 1973 he became an advisor to Chinese forces on Matsu Island, followed by the Command and General Staff College. He then served a three-year tour at the Signal School, Fort Gordon, GA, followed by a two-year tour with MAAG, Korea. He attended the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA where he studied Chinese Mandarin. Bill’s final assignment was with CINCPAC, Hawaii. After retirement Bill worked for ten years in Taiwan with the American Institute in Taiwan and General Electric Aerospace, finally returning to full retirement in 1992. Bill’s wife, Shea, passed away in 2004. They had three children. Theresa, born in Taiwan, lives in Hawaii. Janice, born in Okinawa, resides in Concord, NC and works with the VA Hospital in Salisbury as a psychologist, and Matthew, born in Korea, lives just outside Augusta, GA. Bill is enjoying retired life on a golf course in Lincolnton, GA. During his Army service Bill received numerous awards and decorations but is most proud of the Combat Infantryman Badge, Ranger Tab and Master Parachutist Wings.
