Richard E. Knight Jr.

Richard E. Knight, Jr., was born May 29, 1948 at the Presidio of San Francisco, CA. His father was a WWII paratrooper with two combat jumps. Entered the Army in July 1965 and took basic training at Fort Polk, LA with a company that was all airborne volunteers. Took AIT at Ft. Gordon with all volunteers, went to Jump School a Ft. Benning and then spent 18 months in a rifle squad in the 82nd Abn. as a Grenadier.

Sent to Vietnam in July 1967 with 1st Bde. 101st 2/327 Abn. Spent eight months in C Co. and four months with Battalion Long Range Recon PLT “Hawk Recon.” Served as rifleman, grenadier, point man, fire team leader and RTO. Operated mainly on the Ho Chi Minh Trail and along the Laotian border.

Received the Combat Infantryman Badge, Jump Wings, Bronze Star with V Device, Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and the Civil Actions Honor Medal.

Memorable experience was running into high school friend Bill “Spanky” Spangler outside of Fire Base Bastogne.

Knight was the Service Officer for the American Legion Post 16 in Bisbee, Arizona until he passed in early March, 2002.
